Obligatory Failsafe: Good Ending
Having watched this movie several times a year since I was a lot younger has taught me that maturity is going from thinking that Matthew Broderick was solid in this movie to knowing that Barry Corbin, John Wood, and Ally Sheedy stole the show
Rest in peace Walter Mathau. You would have hated WarGames (1983).
In all seriousness, I can't imagine watching this in 1964. Seeing this and realizing that it's a totally realistic scenario that could happen would have psychologically wounded me for years.
Only drawback is that I felt this movie took too long to really get moving. But by right around the 40 minute mark when Henry Fonda showed up, I was on the edge of my seat with a pit in my stomach.
On rewatch, this movie is even funnier. Also, the color grading and editing is phenomenal. I still can't rate it higher because I have concerns about the creation process, but I think the academy giving best picture to a comedy instead of a oscar-baity biopic period piece is an important step in the right direction.
