Filled with metaphors of early Indian folklore, this film is a devastating portrayal of Indian rural life, where each decisions affects the livelihood of the family. A heartwarming yet heart-wrenching story with beautifully portrayed shots and pacing. Satyajit Ray really delved deep into Bengali storytelling and set the film on a different wavelength than Bengali theatre.
Female characters done right! The writing did not create those Marvel type of over-independent and over confident women with a Hollywood plot armor. It’s a rare sight.
My introduction to Paul Thomas Anderson. What a great movie, starring one of my favourite human beings - Adam Sandler. He delivers such a powerful performance. More importantly, major credits go to PTA for recognising Sandler’s common tropes in his overly criticised and audience-friendly RomComs. He takes Sandler’s kind, comedically indecisive and submissive nature, with famous bursts of anger, and gives a psychologically powerful meaning of depression and loneliness.
