Characters in Michael Mann's films tend to use the ocean as a form of escape. We see this with protagonists in Manhunter, Heat, and Miami Vice. Whether they're staring out at the blue horizon or running towards it, it is clear that Mann sees the ocean as a romantic, contemplative form of escape.

There's a lot of interesting things to talk about in regards to Blackberry. What stood out to me first was the camera work, the newsreel style documentary handheld feel to the whole thing, with wonderfully timed zooms, and the way it frames characters in a shot.

Fincher at his most Bressonian. The ending reminded me of Pickpocket. Felt like a reckoning with one's own work and its impact on culture, especially with how the film is concerned with a meticulous expert who takes aim and narrowly misses, and is then forced to deal with a mess that hurts your loved ones more than it hurts you. Interesting how The Client looks like Fincher. Very clearly the filmmaker examining himself and how he tries to clean up his own mistakes.
