I loved Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo’s performances, but Bong misses the mark on this one.
The film had the potential to explore some interesting philosophical quandaries, but instead, it skims over them like a college freshman who only read the summaries of their required readings and is anxious to change the subject before being exposed.
Narratively, it’s a mess, and none of the emotional beats land. The dialogue often feels clunky and cartoonish, which is an issue I also had with Snowpiercer. The difference is that Snowpiercer at least felt thematically cohesive, whereas this film never quite finds its tonal footing.
