wonderful flick that could've just been another run of the mill buddy movie, but the directing and acting performances really do elevate it to a superior tier of movie! you can feel how much everyone cared abt this production, from the stunts team turning it to 11 to Michael Madsen actually trying in a role
it's a cute, fun, harmless subculture doc on a period where pro MTG was at its peak. Bittersweet viewing for me, at least; seeing Reid Duke in his come-up is lovely but it's so sad how Hasbro has abandoned its pro circuit time and time again.
Nothing groundbreaking or offensive in its craft. Could've stood to go wider or deeper in its scope, it couldn't quite scratch either itch.

I remember seeing the trailer for this at a young age and immediately becoming obsessed.
Out of all the disappointments in my life, this was one of them.
No but fr, it's clear that this movie enjoys certain images and art styles but doesn't know how to make any statements about any of them and so the work falls flatter than the mid story would've taken it without the vaguely Nazi/Communist-blend imagery, etc.
I WILL SAY: the death scene set to Over the Rainbow without any Foley was fucking gold and earns half a star by itself
