Having the coolest DoP and a great score are not enough to save a slow, self-indulgent, pseudo-philosophical film, especially when Czechoslowakian characters are played by American and British actors in their native languages and accents, when a huge spider alien feels like a teddy bear with too many legs, the production design does not make sense (are we in the 70s, 80s, or what? And the Airwaves chewing gums?), and a solo commander of a spaceship gets drunk with vodka…
It might not have the perfect script. It might have its flaws.
But damn it works, and it works perfectly.
A coming-of-age story, an emancipation story, a moving story, a musical story. Music is one of the protagonists, it accompanies the film from the very beginning in so many forms and styles. And it's perfect, every single time.
Acting is beautiful, the message is strong. And it's funny as well!
