Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person 2023
Vampires are cool again. What an incredible balance of humor and poignancy. Everything from the atmosphere, to the score, to the performances makes it all the more surprising it's a directorial debut. The film has such a confidence in its wonderfully dark personality, it's impossible not to be hooked.

Aside from the obvious sucky political messaging, it's a feat of comedic storytelling. Nearly 100 years later, the film's slapstick elements hold up so incredibly well. Coupled with its full embracing of the medium, and Keaton's resolute performance, there's a reason this film's legacy has lasted longer than the institution it's trying to promote.

Despite its clunky narrative structure and pacing, this film punches way above its weight in terms of its nuanced subject matter of race and systemic injustices. In addition, though maybe not incredibly ground-breaking, its visual presentation and use of film form make this easily well deserving of its place in film history.
