Capturing the brilliance that is Charles Chaplin.

Charlie Chaplin is not an easy person to just do a biography on. An iconic figure whose work is the stuff of legend. It’s hard to translate such a person to a believable story featuring likewise performances. For anyone who has seen Richard Attenborough’s dignified Gandhi it does not seem like he would be a bad choice to lend his gravitas to this material. It works out exactly like that as Attenborough and…

"I'm going to see a man about a play."

The ups and (mostly) downs of aspiring actor Sam Lawson (Franciosa) make for a great film, at times a little melodramatic but that doesn't bother me, that spans a lot of years, as we see him struggling to get by. One of the key people in his life is theatrical director Maury Novak (Martin) with whom he develops a difficult but enduring relationship.

Franciosa is excellent as the go for broke…

    The January Man

What a strange film this is, and what a crazy loaded cast. From Kline to Susan Sarandon, Danny Aiello, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Rod Steiger to Harvey Keitel, Bill Cobbs and the great Alan Rickman too. It’s almost too much for this thriller that thinks it’s a comedy or is it the other way around? So it’s obviously not great, but the whole time capsule feel of it made me enjoyed it like the old eighties nineties kid that I am.

Rewatching another Apatow - even though this one isn’t written by him, but Schumer.

Anyway. Still very entertaining, great cast but mostly I just think Bill Hader is perfectly charming in this. A lot of fun.

There is no chance I am able to write an objective review after having seen a Robin Williams film now, but who cares about objectivity at a time like this.

Minor spoilage included, proceed at your own risk.

I have consciously avoided What Dreams May Come since its theatrical run,but I felt like this was as good a time as any as the sad plot might prove to be something of a cathartic experience for me. The story of doctor…

    State of the Union

    ★★★★

Of course anyone would compare this film to that other film by Frank Capra about politics corrupting an earnest man, but State of the Union is much more than just a side note to that particular classic.

Spencer Tracy is being courted by rich and cold newspaper heiress Angela Lansbury to fill the Republican ticket for the presidential election. He is an airplane builder, a rich man who built his company from scratch, a self-made man. He has troubles at…
