Well-acted, entertaining, nice set and costume design. Plot becomes a little predictable/cloying once you get into it but overall worth the watch 7.5/10 perhaps.

Maybe worth 3 lifetime watches tbh it was fun though nice shots. The plot was a little tongue in cheek but there were interesting developments I think. P good writing and acting. Need to watch it probably one more time to have a real solid opinion overall.

A ghibli movie that feels one or two shades more adult than the usual selection and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Although the score consisted of only one or two key pieces (great pieces though they were), ocean waves’ use of diegetic sound adds a layer of texture and authenticity. These background noises even seemed to reference the central struggle of idyllic, small-town childhood vs the reality of maturity in tokyo. The lazy droning of cicadas in kochi give way to emergency…

    Only Yesterday

    ★★★½

While not as exciting or evocative as some of Ghibli’s other works, Only Yesterday invites the viewer to vicariously take part in the nostalgia and remembrances of a girl growing up in a rapidly-modernizing 1980s Japan. Idyllic Japanese countryside and farmland serve as the backdrop while tradition clashes with the modern. Overall, a great slice of life that can be quite engaging for those of us wishing to see a reality that popular anime rarely seems to visit. It’s also worth noting that the Dubbed voice acting is passable but pretty subpar for a studio like Ghibli.
