Could likely shave off 15 minutes, but blown away once again on rewatch. Knowing the ending doesn’t detract from the film’s ability to create unease — its mystery remains intact. Somewhat lazy on my part to compare to Parasite (shouldn’t compare Korean films only to other Korean films), but Burning handles similar themes of class and wealth more artfully, and I think this is a better movie. Minus .5 star for Jong-su saying his favorite writer is Faulkner 🤮
Uneven Tarantino simulacrum (we even got Sam Jackson), redeemed in part by a soulful Philip Baker Hall performance and a white hot Philip Seymour Hoffman cameo — Anderson must have really been taken with that funeral dirge-sounding music because I’m pretty sure it shows up again in Boogie Nights
