The Killing of a Sacred Deer

    ★★★★½

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a great follow-up from The Lobster by Lanthimos. It's not as funny as the prior but is comical in its own dark manner.

The movie starts out slow and strange, nothing uncommon in a Lanthimos film. The dialogue did not flow as well as The Lobster and sometimes goes too far. That being said, the film's plot is well crafted as Colin Farrell's character deals with his dilemma of moral ambiguity.

Wonderful performances from Farrell, Kidman, and Keoghan brings this movie to be one of my favorites of the year.

    Death Note

    ★★

Being a fan of the original work, it was a tiny bit better than I expected but it was still a fairly bad movie. I was fine with the character changes and actually liked some of them (Mia was an interesting take on Misa) but the movie failed to capture what was so great about the anime. It did not delve into the cat and mouse game between Light and L. There wasn't an intellectual battle between the two which left the film very disappointing...

Patty Jenkins does a wonderful job on her movie directorial return. The tone of the movie is impressive. Getting the Greek mythology down during the World War I era in such a convincing manner is no small feat.

A lot of questions were asked of Gal Gadot's acting ability before this movie but she proved the doubters wrong with a strong performance. She was charming and powerful throughout the movie showing heart and passion.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

    ★★★

Valerian is an absolutely gorgeous movie with an abundance of issues. Individually, the lead actors did well but had absolutely no chemistry together leaving their relationship unbelievable. The overall story was a good idea done poorly. The big "reveal" was not so big and left you wanting more. There was so much useless plot throughout the movie as well contributing nothing to the story.

The City of a Thousand Planets seems like a fantastic immersive world but Besson fails to explore its vastness. If anything, this movie makes me want to read its original comic to get a more competent story.
