An angry, disturbing account of the oppressive power of family. Disclaimer that I’m not familiar with Egoyan’s work or opera as a whole. I found the stage production elements impressive. Mixing film and live theater makes for a fun, dynamic setting and some cool editing sequences. Outside of seyfried, the performances felt a little amateur and raw, which I didn’t necessarily mind. That kind of verisimilitude can work well for some stories, but they fall flat here and undermine seyfried’s tortured psychodrama. The subplot with Clea did not sit well either, it was too facetious. Despite that, this was an engaging watch that held my attention throughout, if not my interest.

slow, delicate, measured camera work that captures Mira's gaze so well. kani kusruti is an absolute boilermaker, just dominates every scene she's in. powerfully depicts the earth-shattering cringe and heartbreaking stoicism of parent-child relationships in brown families

I was wrapped in every pastoral landscape, rapt at every deafening nonverbal exchange. Lucia's red bonnet against the crisp whites and soft blues of winter, the lush greens and shimmering yellows of spring and summer that are so refreshing until suddenly they're suffocating. The characters are so…
