What can be said about this movie which hasn’t already been said about my last trip to the john. It stinks.
It’s laughable when it’s supposed to be chilling, listless when it’s supposed to be shocking, and melodramatic when it’s supposed to be poignant. Romances are hackneyed, motives are opaque and speculative, and tone shifts with abandon; however, its biggest flaw is that it takes itself too seriously.
Also, as someone who lives 20 minutes from Holland, please do not let this movie taint your ideal of that genuinely lovely town and its people.
