As far as experimental Soderbergh goes, this is in the upper echelons for me. The genre hook roped me into watching a family drama, one inherently obvious and simplistic due to the trappings of the gimmick, yet nonetheless captivating, original and moving. I’ve read a number of reviews chastising the film for a lack of suspense and predictability, but I felt the turn it took in the 3rd act to be riveting as well as contributing the film’s nihilistic outlook.…

The Monkey 2025
I had a good time and there are some great kills, but the film struggles with tone throughout. The humor of the absurd situation would have been better served by playing it straight instead of the slapstick approach on the material; Perkins is pivoting from his usual austere tone (not that his previous films are completely devoid of humor, astute viewers will recognize some recycled bits from Longlegs), but ultimately he is the wrong filmmaker to be attempting this approach and now I feel like watching one of the better Final Destinations or Happy Death Day.
