I'd always heard about this movie in the context of it being a failed distribution experiment but that's doing the movie a disservice. It's interesting as a standalone work, providing an early 2000s time capsule portrait of specific kind of american worker. The non-actors and location shooting provided a verisimilitude often lacking in more traditional work. The prison visitor area depicted at the end of the movie was unlike any I had seen on film before and Soderbergh masterfully films the final tragic conversation between the two leads in extreme CU through the porthole size viewing window.
