Tanner Benson

Tanner Benson Pro

Is it slow? Is it weird? Am I conflicted? Does it make me think all sorts of thinkies or feel all sorts of feelies? ... This is my jam.

    “I’m about to have a thought…

    …and it’s gone.”

In an age of comic book adaptations I’m SHOCKED that I don’t hear about this more. So fun and cartoony almost on the level of Roger Rabbit, but also surprisingly engaging and heartfelt.

Similar to another gimmicky gangster flick, Bugsy Malone, this movie supersedes its aesthetic gimmick and fully invests itself in the reality of its world. Pacino is excellent, and it’s the first time I’ve actually liked Warren Beatty in a role.

    Super fun and unexpected.

I’ve been searching for that Hal Ashby high since I saw The Last Detail. I love Harold and Maude, but the sailor movie is like lightning in a bottle. The more Ashby I watch, the more that seems confirmed to me.

I struggle with movies that have such unlikeable protagonists who embody such obviously troublesome habits that the tragedy seems inevitable.

There’s no honesty in the movie until the last act, which redeems it a little and the movie finally…

    Insanely fun.
More heart than any movie since Paddington 2.

It started to feel a little redundant by the end but it’s a wild ride nonetheless.

    Civil War

    ★★★½

Does it say anything meaningful? No
    Is it thoroughly entertaining? Yes

    Frustrating because it’s baiting.

To make a movie about this particular topic at this particular moment and not have anything to contribute to the conversation is annoying.

But the story, performances, and cinematography drew me in—
If it had been made in a world where destruction didn’t already feel like an imminent possibility, it would have succeeded greatly.
