The Brutalist 2024
Largely succeeds by resisting any easy characterizations or conclusions in what might seem to be a classic postwar narrative. I find Modernism and all of its contradictions so fascinating -- the beauty in its utilitarian ethos, isolation engendered in the search for unity, spaces both oppressive and airy -- similarly, the dissonances within László, Harrison, and the American immigration story. How did we get here, in spite of all our good intentions? Are legacies earned, or written? Does the sex have to be that weird?
