This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I wanted to like it, but I just can't get there. I love fun shots (camera as tennis ball is aces!), but it's over-directed. The Reznor score is pretty good but again, overused. (Aside, Reznor has always been always good at minimum & often great. I love that he does scores.) I'm scrolling through reviews, and listened to a hour-long Behind the Screenplay pod, and those are the first things talked about by those who like and dislike the movie. That's…
This is a propaganda film, for the most part. Robbins is the world's most successful snake oil salesman. The movie portrays him in a completely positive light, and lacks a critical eye. However, if you peel away the layers yourself, you can see some really horrible aspects to his personality and practices. You can see so many similarities to a traveling preacher show. It's possible the filmmakers did this on purpose, but I'm not convinced they did that.
Horrible. The filmmaking is lazy and vapid, kind of like its characters. How many times do I need to see them lip-sync to the radio?
Do yourself a favour and watch Spring Breakers instead.
