    Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

I went to Palazzo Fava for an Ai Weiwei art exhibition and ended up watching this film on an uncomfortable wooden stool with no back rest.

A pig that doesn’t fly is just a pig.

Good score, pretty animation of the Italian landscape, but a slightly underwhelming finish.

I have always found Bong Joon-Ho’s international films a bit kitsch, lacking the nuanced political messaging embedded in his Korean-speaking films. Perhaps it comes down to a translation barrier, but Mickey 17 was perhaps a little too garish for me. It is also ironic how with Nasha’s whole speech about anti-colonialism, the ending still proudly portrayed the instruments of human settlement — war machines neatly parked in a parade square.

This may be the best one yet. Beautifully incorporating the Art Deco aesthetic of Tim Burton’s renditions with Joker’s element of insanity and jadedness, this film had all the right vibes.
Despite the saturated catalogue of iterations the legendary masked vigilante has, this film still manages to carve its own niche among its predecessors as a nail-biting film noir crime thriller that immediately draws comparisons to Se7en or Silence of the Lambs, cutting the edge the superhero genre once again.
