Haunting visuals laden with beautiful color and now-nostalgic Americana anchor the subdued, emotive performance of Harry Dean Stanton opposite the perfectly innocent Hunter Carson. The sparseness of the film perfectly matches the vacancy portrayed, and the complexity of the family dynamic is enough to keep the viewer engaged throughout. Wim Wenders perfectly portrays the agony of impossible love, and the performances from all members of the cast heighten this heart-wrenching tale of love lost. Somehow hyperspecific and universal, Wenders creates here perhaps the perfect anti-romance.

Scorsese outdoes himself in this grimy, unvarnished look at a decaying, corrupt New York City matched with a spiteful, maladjusted would-be murderer. What makes this film extraordinary is the director's willingness to make no apologies for his subject: DeNiro's Travis is clearly bigoted, obsessive, and looking for a direction to thrust his violent, unchecked hatred. Yet Scorsese does not paint this character, a frightening prototype of the discontented "incel" figure so common in modern news, as a villain beyond understanding.…
