This is feminist film! Arati challenges patriarchal pressure from her husband, her father in law, her son, and her boss. Satyajit Ray demonstrates how women’s rights are often garnered as they gain agency in the face of the economic needs of their families. I was impressed that the film also led into scenes about workers’ solidarity in the face of discrimination. The camaraderie in the scenes between Arati and her sister in law and coworkers warmed my heart the most.…
