Terrence Malick’s debut is an important one in the history of 1970s Hollywood. During the era of Scorsese, Coppola and Spielberg it is clear that Malick brought something that was very different to Hollywood cinema at the time. He was very unique. I always found that Badlands introduces Malick’s style so well. Badlands is absolutely gorgeous to look at. The shots of the open plains of Montana just fill me with joy.
Malick has a way of shooting nature that…

The Assassin is a hard film to talk about. On the one hand I absolutely loved its images they were so visually striking. The film plays out almost like a visual poem in the same way as Tarkovsky’s Mirror.

Since David Lynch’s passing yesterday I’ve decided to go on a journey through Lynch’s entire filmography including Twin Peaks. I feel it best to honour the artistic legacy of one of the great visionaries but also the fact Lynch is my biggest inspiration and favourite filmmaker.
Starting off with his 1977 film Eraserhead. I love this movie it has a very simple message but told against the backdrop of Lynch’s iconic dreamlike style. The film plays out like one big…

That final shot of Giulietta Masina’s face is heartbreaking. She goes through the entire film searching for love or at the very least a connection with someone but ultimately she has the worst luck. Every male character she comes across treats her horribly. You feel a huge amount of empathy for her as we follow her devastating journey. Fellini tells her story with such subtlety through his marvellous sense of visual storytelling. He recognises that Giulietta Masina has such an expressive face which shows so much emotion.
