A coy film with a pair of mesmerizing performances at its center. Upon release I didn’t get it, and maybe I still don’t, but the characters have never left me. I keep returning to it for its odd tone, hypnotic score, and top tier performances.

The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014
Wes Anderson’s masterpiece. While the characters in his older films speak to me more directly, there is no debating The Grand Budapest Hotel’s placement at the top of the peak. Wes’ signature style is at its most effortlessly controlled, the performances are dialed to exactly the right pitch, and the story prances along to a touching conclusion. I firmly believe that without Ralph Fiennes the film would be less by half, his performance is that essential to the tone. What else can be said, it’s perfect. If you haven’t watched it. Do.

The Darjeeling Limited 2007
Whenever I watch The Darjeeling LimitedI think of my brothers. The secrets we keep, the pride and concern. The hundred little memories that inform the present conversation. It’s a good film. Cozy, sad, sweet, and redemptive.
