We get M. Night Shyamalan-ed really early in this one, and I kept thinking another big twist was coming. Anyone going into this expecting a great—or even good—movie will not get it, but it was entertaining enough for what it was: a Shyamalan pop thriller for Gen Z.

The Many Saints of Newark 2021
The Many Saints of Newark feels like it’s trying too hard to balance paying homage to The Sopranos with carving out a distinct cinematic identity. While this ambition is understandable, it often comes at the cost of the grit and humour that defined the original series. The story itself felt very underwhelming, and I found myself wanting more focus on Tony’s development. Despite some fine moments, a good performance from Michael Gandolfini, and decent enough cinematography, the film as a whole didn’t leave much of an impact on me.

The Substance 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
For fans of body horror—or in this case, a wild, gonzo body-horror comedy—The Substance delivers. A few years ago, I saw Revenge by Coralie Fargeat, and I was excited to see her follow-up. The film feels like a blend of Lynch, Cronenberg, and Carpenter, but set in the world of Showgirls. It is incredibly playful and certainly not for the squeamish, as it ranks a solid 9.5/10 in the violence/gross-out department.
However, the violence isn’t without purpose—form meets content head-on…
