Jumanji 1995

I appreciate the more serious side of Robin Williams, without all the goofy voices and impersonations. Russel Van Pelt is a great antagonist. A solid classic to return to from time to time. This was probably the first fantasy movie I ever watched. Those 1995 special effects thoooooough.

Paradoxical in that a lot happened and yet nothing happened. You can feel the slight disconnect between the two cousins from the start. Kieran’s character feels like that guy that dies and everyone says “He was hands down one of the best and loving people we knew, if only he could get out of his own way.”

This isn’t necessarily elite cinema, but from a nostalgic standpoint I don’t know if there’s a film I love more. After 50+ watches it still isn’t old. I love the desperate underdog story of trying to get sponsored. A bitchin’ soundtrack and tons of great cameos: Mike V, P-Rod, a young Sheckler, Burnquist, Lasek, and Bam. There’s a real fun feel to the whole thing; a group of idiot friends going on a roadtrip and making the best out of crappy situations. The bloopers gives the sense that the team had a blast making the film too.

I’m a sucker for a good adventure film. Zack and Shia’s chemistry is great. One of the best feel-good films of the last decade. I’m sure I’ll make my way back to this one for a third go-round.
