Molto bene. Grazie! Cosi cosi?
Mi chiamo signoro Fragola. Uno margherita? No... Venti cigarette!
I'm not jewish. This film was not made specifically for me. As a result the Tour Guide's command of scenes provided a peculiar but understandable sense of comfort. I didn't immediately know how to interpret a lot of the brotherly dialogue, especially when it became more explicitly historically sensitive. On the one hand, it's funny: they've grown up together, they banter, they know each other's boundaries. On the other, it's vulnerable, intimate and a private exchange of the Jewish Experience…
On its face, it's a story that aptly captures the lower class struggle for food and housing, as well as the desperate scramble for employment and financial stability. The zero-sum nature of employment is used to explore internal class conflict and the moral implications of attacks horizontally. Despite the grim reality and poignant relatability, this film is a dark comedy (if you don't laugh, you'll cry?) It's a Thriller, but it's also a heist film in the first half and, loosely, a revenge tale in the second. With these arcs and stunning cinematography, I was enthralled the whole time.
