Amidst a growing energy shortage across the city, the citizens of Monstropolis look to an unlikely duo of power-plant workers: Michael Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James Sullivan (John Goodman) to ensure their TVs stay on (?) and their power bills stay low (??).
When the pair spark a containment breach they find themselves on a wild-goose chase to locate and entertain a teleporting 3-year old. But in their hunt for a giggling cat-lover, what else will Mike and Sulley discover…
On its face, it's a story that aptly captures the lower class struggle for food and housing, as well as the desperate scramble for employment and financial stability. The zero-sum nature of employment is used to explore internal class conflict and the moral implications of attacks horizontally. Despite the grim reality and poignant relatability, this film is a dark comedy (if you don't laugh, you'll cry?) It's a Thriller, but it's also a heist film in the first half and, loosely, a revenge tale in the second. With these arcs and stunning cinematography, I was enthralled the whole time.
