  I often confused this silliness with Top Secret! (1984). 
  Slightly shocked that this actually preceded Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life (1983). What a time to be alive.

  WHY DOES NO ONE RECOGNIZE THIS AS THE MASTERPIECE IT IS!?!? 

  Orange County is so important to me. It came along at precisely the right time (my last semester of high school, college acceptance letters, started dating my wife the month it was released). 

  So many life lessons contained within 75-minutes of comedic genius. I saw this four times in theatres, bought the soundtrack, and skipped school the day the DVD was released.

  Miyazaki’s gift is the ability to capture children as children. Their movements, their excitement, their wonder. Instead of cutting ahead to the next scene, we observe a small child struggling to climb down the stairs. Instead of just waiting in the rain, we observe an older sister put her younger sibling on her back. None of this is necessary, but all of it is true. These small elegances are what endear us and allow us to open up to a world of goodness and care. A world that still involves fear and anxiety, but is nevertheless held together in love.
