The Dead 1987
Watched with my uncle after a long period of him singing this film’s praises and my expectations were exceeded ten fold.
The Dead, despite being from an American director, captures the exact Irish essence of what made James Joyce so genius while simultaneously accessible. The home feels lived in, the characters feel comfortable to be around each other and the dialogue is raw and relatable. Every performance filled with micro-expression and nuances, the flow is never lost within the constant course of entertainment.
A criminally underrated film that I can see myself coming back to time and time again.

Easily the best child performance of the year from Milo Machado-Graner.
Anatomy of a Fall is the most well-written courtroom drama I’ve seen. Haven’t seen many but the sentiment still stands. The two and a half hour runtime felt so much shorter than you’d think because of just how captivating the script is. It keeps you second guessing yourself over and over up until the satisfying conclusion. There’s no world where this wins best picture but I wouldn’t be angry if it did.
Also, very impressive Sandra Hüller acted in three different languages in 2023.
