If you want to watch several talented and respected well-known actors delivering lines and a plot straight from a TV movie, then this is for you. You’ll also be delighted to know that it’s directed and shot like a mystery-of-the-week TV drama.
In fact, if I were told that this was a tongue-in-cheek tribute to those leaden, formulaic, shoot-em-quick-and-move-on-to-next-week shows with guest stars who were medium-big 20 years ago, that would make more sense to me than telling me this…
Loved this. Come for Timothy Spall exuding condescension and privilege from every pore. Stay for Jessie Buckley attacking a gloriously vulgar role with vigour. But it’s Olivia Coleman being her usual brilliant self that steals it, of course it is. Could anyone else have played this role anywhere near as well? Effortlessly combining innocence with sublime flecks of wickedness, through furtive glances and glints in her eye… how do you act glints in your eye?
Great script, wonderful sets and scenery, superb supporting cast. A little gem of a film.
Believe the hype. A beautiful marvel (small ‘M’) of a movie, easy on the eye and heavy on the heart. I defy any parent to not have at least moist eyes by the end of this.
I have no idea where to start with this film. It's about so many things, here's a few: love versus beliefs, the beauty of drugs, radicalism through suppression, art from boredom, finding your why, colonialism, the after effects of colonialism, lust, obsession.... but it's also a) fucking funny, b) has a great soundtrack and c) just gives you a smile. It's basically a weird, beautiful hybrid between 24 Hour Party People, Michael Collins, The Commitments and High School Musical. Love…
