Looks like subtlety still hasn't made it into Bong Joon Ho's repetoir. The themes are very easy to interpret and it's very clear where Bong stands on them. Despite the somewhat clunky real world parallels, Bong clearly has his finger on the pulse. I'm surprised how spot on the colonisation themes were considering this was filmed in 2022. Colonisation has always been relevant of course but Mickey 17 connects colonisation to Kenneth Marshall in a way that has become extra relevant in the past 6 months. I had a great time with it. It's just a little too on the nose for my taste.

A Bigger Splash 2015
Everybody sucks here! Brilliantly acted and simultaneously very hard to watch. Nobody here is in any way relatable or sympathetic. I'm sure that's the point. How the rich feel that they can basically do no wrong. But it didn't gel with me.

The Worst Man in London 2024
An interesting portrait of an extremely interesting man. Although I did find it hard to follow. The characters have to catch you up on the plot sometimes by conveniently talking exposition to eachother. This might have been easier with more historical context (which I did not have before the Q&A). The production design, cinematography and lighting are beautiful. I liked the shots that used blue and orange lighting on the different characters.

The Promised Land 2023
Dear Nikolaj Arcel,
I was at your IFFR screening of The Promised Land today. After the film, I was quite excited to see the Q&A. You started off pretty well, if a bit full of yourself. Then came the dreaded woke question. It doesn't happen every Q&A but it's not unlikely to see someone try and apply modern left-wing politics to a film. This person said that the film was quite political.
