Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In

Maybe half an hour or about three fight scenes too long. The story is pretty predictable, as expected from a movie like this, but it drags a little too long. The choreography and cinematography were cool though! It's a modern film but you can clearly see the traditional 70's and 80's roots.

I love the little details in the limited set design. They reduced a township to mostly just lines and letters on the floor. But when the autumn leaves blow around, they stop outside the lines! And the lines disappear when a building burns down! That's great commitment to the bit.

Fuckin miserable movie otherwise. A hateful depiction of capitalism, xenophobia and the masking of those things. Rightfully hateful but draining nonetheless.

An interesting portrait of an extremely interesting man. Although I did find it hard to follow. The characters have to catch you up on the plot sometimes by conveniently talking exposition to eachother. This might have been easier with more historical context (which I did not have before the Q&A). The production design, cinematography and lighting are beautiful. I liked the shots that used blue and orange lighting on the different characters.

    Dear Nikolaj Arcel,

I was at your IFFR screening of The Promised Land today. After the film, I was quite excited to see the Q&A. You started off pretty well, if a bit full of yourself. Then came the dreaded woke question. It doesn't happen every Q&A but it's not unlikely to see someone try and apply modern left-wing politics to a film. This person said that the film was quite political.

You perked up as if you knew what…
