On Cannes and the Golden Globes:

To award any prize to this film is a political choice. A political choice is not in itself, essentially, ontologically an issue. Except here it is a political choice disguised, presented as an objective decision made by a supposedly qualified group of people. A cynical, dangerous pick, for it distorts standards, and legitimizes stupidity. It should be obvious it is political, considering how terrible this film is, but it isn’t obvious anymore; and that is precisely where the power and danger of these awards live. And testament to how confused our standards already are.

The staged moments reveal a German lack of sensitivity that I didn't know Herzog had. Out of touch with the tone of the film, with the seriousness, and tragic beauty, of the story, and with reality itself.

But then… did he even know what the intention was? Did…

The dialogue, and perhaps the writing in general, isn’t great. But we kind of expect that from Cronenberg, with his awkward actors saying all those awkward things, always.

And it’s not exactly “scientifically accurate.” But we also kind of expect that from Cronenberg and his inventiveness.

The differences from his previous good work, though, are that we don’t really get a cool explanation for the scientific inaccuracy. It’s Lamarckism, but “no one really knows how it works,” and that’s it.…
