Bringing Out the Dead 1999
It seems like this movie is getting a reputation for being an underrated gem from Scorsese and Schrader, and I think that this is only fair. Darkly funny and surprisingly chilling, this film is an excellent portrayal of how "everyday heroes" are no more heroic than the people they have to save (or put up with).

The Asphalt Jungle 1950
One of my new favorite noir films. It has it all: the promise of One Last Score, a complex series of double crosses, a multifaceted cast of crooks, and no light at the end of the tunnel. Well-paced and well-written, it has perhaps half a dozen of the coldest lines ever written in the genre. This is maybe my new favorite Sterling Hayden performance. His mix of desperation and longing with cool decisiveness and determination, all hidden behind the facade of a simple farmer is a fantastic characterization. Will definitely be returning to this one.

The Apartment 1960
Great movie! A mature and clever send-up of workplace extortion and the patriarchy behind it. I was so impressed with how this movie deals so frankly with themes of exploitation and sexual privilege while remaining so charming and funny. It veers so easily from heartbreaking and bleak to sentimental and sweet without losing you. Lovely film.
