To this day the best looking Doctor Who story ever and surprising with how many little details it gets right, like the Doctor’s characterisation, when it gets so many big things, like being accessible to new audiences wrong.
There’s a lot to like here in comparison to X, it has more of a focus on character storytelling and has a similarly endearing, unique sense of style. The slasher elements sometimes feel like they get too grotesque for what was achievable and end up looking cartoonish. Like X, it hasn’t got a super compelling plot but makes up for it with Pearl’s interesting character.
A really solid, normal Doctor Who episode which does the sort of exciting, surprising things I’ve been missing from it for so long.
While the fun horror and action stuff is the most memorable part of this episode, the way that’s balanced with interesting and surprising character work is what makes it more impactful. A lot of super impressive colourised shots but this is really let down by the new edits. The original story has some bits I’m sure would be fine to remove but much of the atmosphere and tension is lost with this. I’m sure this would be a fine way to get into 60s Who but new viewers ironically may have more trouble following the plot at points.
