One time, I applied to be a janitor at an Adult Video store in Denver that had an "arcade" down a dark hallway. The building was gross and dimly lit, and open 24/7 with discreet parking out back. Despite a smoking ban in place for years, the inside still reeked of cigarettes and shame. Not one ounce of me wanted to work in that shithole but my reasoning was if I lowered the bar THAT much for myself, then every other job I’d have in life afterward wouldn’t seem as bad.

Watching A Haunted House is kinda like the movie version of that.

Andrea Arnold's documentary fly-on-the-wall style elevates this from being just another road movie into your own personal seat in the van as we witness these people do whatever they can just to get by.

Watching this I couldn't help but be transported back to when I was 21 and found myself traveling across the country with a group of kids with nowhere to call home. They hitchhiked, train-hopped, played songs for whatever bit of change or food someone could spare,…

The 2.2 rating on here is absolutely absurd!

This is quickly becoming one of my comfort flicks. Just an absolute feel-good blast from start to finish.

The soundtrack is bangin, the set design is ridiculous, Vanilla Ice is incredibly charismatic, the one-liners are nonstop, and it’s probably one of the best looking movies of the 90s. (No wonder the DP would go on to shoot pretty much every Spielberg pic.) Just look at this or this clip.

    There’s some plot…

    From my previous review:

Not a great film by any means, but the more I watch it, the more I’m convinced it’s a great performance. At the very least, it’s the most effort Travolta has put into anything in the past decade. He straight up disappears into this role to the point where I forget it’s the same guy from Pulp Fiction, Saturday Night Fever, and Grease.

The fact that he took the role to honor his dead autistic son…

Had to check to see if this was listed under the genre "Fantasy" because the cop got fired AND went to jail for six months after beating up an unarmed black man.

One of the reasons we go to the movies is to challenge our thoughts. To make us think about things we might not have otherwise. I love sitting in front of the big screen and questioning the themes, symbolism, and deeper meaning behind it all, but when the only thinking I’m doing is trying to decipher the basic storyline itself, then I’m spending my time thinking of the wrong things.

Maybe I’ll check it out again to get another perspective…
