Eyes of Fire 1983
The evil is in the land, the devils in our nature are one with the world around us. A wonderfully evocative dark fairy tale. The production design and writing are leagues above most horror films from the era.
The movie exists in a historical liminality, like a folk horror Stalker on a Canadian T.V films budget.

Conan the Barbarian 1982
Rewatching this, I was really taken aback at how lavish the production design and cinematography is. Duke Callaghan handsomely photographs the dusty windswept steppes of Spain. Arnie is perfect in the stoicism required, yet James Earl Jones’ Thulsa Doom really steals the show.
It’s such an iconic performance, channeling the fears that leaders like Manson and Jim Jones gave the American public.
John Milius directs the crap out of this movie, giving the violence a gory graduate in its staging. Plus, Arnie knocking out a camel IRL is classic.
