John Henry and the Inky-Poo 1946
Highly enjoyable Puppetoon retelling of the John Henry folk tale utilizes wonderful stop-motion animation and Rex Ingram's baritone voice to capture a small slice of Americana as only the best short films of the era could. A bigger than life tale of the American working man's role in the building of the railroad, and in particular the black experience thereof, as well as a testament to the indelible strength of American will power. It's not perfect, but it's absolutely sublime.
