Continues to have a bewitching effect. There were lots of 'quirky' American films in the late 90s/early 00s though many of them worked hard to have that word conferred upon them. If not quirky, then twee, but eventually both fell out of favour. This one would beat the coffee table tags as it was genuinely quirky but not forced, authentically twee, but not cloying or soft. In fact, at times it has the danger and toughness of film noir, and a million miles from twee. Visually unique, slyly cruelly written (like Billy Wilder) and fantastic performances all round.
Pluses: A flavour of Ira Levin grew apparent in the last stretch and this was executed well, a creepy darkly comic tension.
Minuses: Felt rather underdeveloped and rickety by the end, very unsure of what it wanted to be. In sum, interesting, well-made, but neither scary nor wholly satisfying.
