There’s a scene in this film where a character describes a specific experience as a mirror, not a portal. I suppose, for many of us, that’s also true of watching this adaptation.

If you're looking for one film this year in which the protagonist witnesses the rise and fall of a forbidden love-don't see Gatsby. Go see Mud instead.

The only scene this coming-of-age story lacks is the "I'm in over my head" moment. The structure of the film prevented the catharsis and the climax from falling in tandem. Instead, we hear the bullet far before the trigger's pulled.

With that said, Mud is still an amazing film that deserves to be seen by those looking to read between the lines and those looking for an enjoyable film.

Debut film by 26-year-old director Josh Trank follows three young protagonists as they obtain and learn to control telekinetic powers. It's Cloverfield meets Akira. It's X-Men meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's deep and and it's shallow. Matthew, one of the protagonists, alludes to Plato's Allegory of the Cave. That is exactly what this movie is about. Dealing with the aftermath of having your perception of morality and reality shattered. Worth a view.
