A psychosexual odyssey through the prism of an aging, gnarled Junkie Aesthete. Craig is unrecognisable, and joylous turns by Shwartzman and Manville make this an acting coup de grace. A blossom perfumed marriage of surreal visuals and creeping dread. The scenes of Lee's longing for his lover take your breath from your stopped throat. There is beauty and there is depravity. This film weighs them equally. I know David Lynch would adore the strange hotel rooms and Erebus eating his tail. If twenty minutes were trimmed t'would be a masterpiece.

The Bikeriders 2023
A true Goodfellas homage. A fat dollop of 50s schlock, a cup of Kenneth Anger's 'Scorpio Rising', two huffs of 70s American Cynism and a filleted cut of humour. Immense fun and real escapist cinema. Ace.

Contempt 1963

Henry Fonda gives an ice block performance of jagged cool, against the most gorgeous black and white photography since Citizen Kane. It's the opus of his filmmaking since 'Stagecoach'.
It feels similar in tone to 'Touch of Evil' in its razor cynicism and hall of mirrors esque photography. It reminds me of the anecdote that when Orson Welles was asked for…
