It’s not quite as dumb as I remembered it, and the opening is actually quite strong. The plane stunts and train stunts are pretty good, Q is always a delight, and there are some fun bits. But the villain’s plan is convoluted, the middle drags, and Bond just does not belong in a circus.
Also, while it’s cool that Bond finally goes to India, it kinda sucks that the villains there are a white woman and middle eastern man (played by a white man), and their general approach to India is very “wow, look at how exotic and weird this country is”.
It’s not perfect, and if you want to be nitpicky, god knows there’s plenty of nits to pick. It’s just that I don’t think it materially affects how much I enjoyed this. Thrilling, moving, gorgeously shot and acted. A genuinely satisfying conclusion to not just Craig’s Bond but the whole concept of Bond.
Also, I normally hate the concept of spin-offs, but if Amazon decided to use their new Bond rights to give Paloma a spin-off, I think that’d be a much better use of the IP than another reboot.
Was not expecting to love this as much as I did. Just absolutely ridiculous balls-to-the-wall Bond nonsense in the best way. A two hour film that packs in so much that it felt like three (but like, in a good way). They just really need to stop using the terrible Roger Moore-era sound effects.
Also I think Dalton is a great Bond overall, but he unfortunately does spend a good chunk of the movie looking like he’s trying real hard to not shit himself.
Baffling sound design, music, and fashion, but most baffling is how they managed to make it so…boring.
