Good golly god damn I would marry Cate Blanchett, too.

Not a big Soderbergh fan but this was excellent. The casting is phenomenal, and I really love how the battles in this were fought with words. Refreshing return to form for the espionage thriller that wasn’t suffocated by shitty action pieces and too many explosions.

Gyllenhaal is outstanding and I’ll always love Villeneuve’s direction but this is an aggressively alright film. There’s plenty of great stuff, however, none of it feels that impactful. It’s likely I’d garner a deeper appreciation for this upon another viewing, but the glaring issue is that I have no true desire to revisit this.

I cannot possibly express my excitement to begin diving into Ingmar Bergman’s work after this. Not a single misused frame, and some really incredible moments dipped in their own extremisms of separate emotions throughout.
Brilliant stuff.

What a piece of slophouse garbage. Manages to fumble the concept with an insanely pretentious (and at times predatory) narrative. This plays like an angst-filled film student’s shitty attempt to make meaning where there isn’t much; it’s muddled and jumpy, the casting is awful, and the screenplay is abysmal. 

This is worse than mediocrity on just about every level, unless you’re the target audience, who seem to be entirely blinded by its shortcomings for what can be considered personal representation.
