A bit hamfisted in the second half but overall I really enjoyed this. It has an unusual filmic grammar that means I’m perpetually a bit on edge and so always engaged. Not boring! Enjoy a film that just feels a bit weird, but somehow still works, also not weird in an art house way like look at me I’m so intentionally weird but just unexpected mixups.
More films need intervals, facilitating a second half popcorn frenzy.
Didn’t realise the director also made vox lux, which I also enjoyed in a very similar way.
This film was a gem I loved it so much. Beautiful and whimsical and romantic but also some thoughts to mull over and omg so many stunning Japanese countryside landscapes love it.
