Even if this wasn’t a “superhero” movie, it’s still top-notch entertainment. Thrilling action movie, intense crime-drama, and a story that pulls you in and doesn’t let up (this was two and a half hours? Didn’t feel it at all…).

If Batman, Joker, Two-Face etc. were played for real… this is what I’d expect it to be like. Revolutionary then… and still a major standout from all the superhero fluff today.

Ambitious writing, stunning visuals, smart approach, and an amazing cast… I did find the editing to be spotty at times (and a nuisance at other times), but this took me right back to 2005 when I first saw it and gave me the exact same reactions.

After Batman & Robin, this was the type of movie needed to bring him back into the spotlight.

Loved the characters (yes, even Beatrice Dalle’s unhinged and layered villain), the tension was thick, it’s aesthetically gorgeous, the music destroyed me, very original story (especially for the time), and it had a big set of balls when it came to showcasing its violence and terror of the scenes. One of my favorite horror films of all time.

    Nice little Christmas-time watch.

Is it because it’s not more of the same that people hate this so much?

It was beautifully shot, beautifully acted, and went at the material in a very unique/interesting way while respecting its source material.

Could’ve easily trimmed some of the numbers/court scenes down, and one particular character I needed more closure with, but this was a good sequel and well worth the watch. Extremely underrated.
