To me the movie is about both the joys and shortcomings of the ascetic life. It showcases how there is so much beauty and meaning in our daily rituals and living in the present; this grounding perspective can prevent us from getting trapped by life’s more visceral emotions (desire like his first coworker or pride like his family perhaps).
