Genuinely loved Manchester By The Sea. Tragic, inspiring and unexpectedly very in funny in places. Not seen Moonlight yet, but I'd be very happy if this won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. Weirdly Casey Affleck's performance as the Sad Face emoji laid it on a bit thick for my tastes.
This beautifully designed and tenderly performed tale of forbidden lady love in 1950s New York will be catnip for awards season prognosticators, and deservedly so. This makes its descent into a girl-on-girl tits and minge fuck fest all the more surprising (and rewarding). Who knew Cate Blanchette was so bendy?!
Despite its laughably indestructible protagonist and the (presumably) digitally assisted set-pieces MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION feels like refreshingly old fashioned fun. As silly as M:I5 is, it's great to have a break from digital characters engaged in unrelenting consequence-free planet-levelling destruction. The motorbike and digital vault heist sequences exceed the much hyped (and still stunning) plane sequence through excellent design and tight editing. Rogue Nation is up there with the best of the series, 19 years on and 5 films in and this franchise is in bullish form.
