A Real Pain 2024
kieran culkin the talent on you!!!
this is gorgeous. i love the filming style: it’s soft, personal, simple. the bits and pieces of history hidden in reconstruction, the characters walking through sites of an entire people’s resilience. benji is so interesting, boisterous and charming yet fragile and misunderstood. he cares so much and loves so hard, and is frustrated when people can’t see the world as he does. the film runs a bit short, but it is not about resolution,…

Requiem for a Dream 2000
loved the style and the film-making but this all felt unempathetic and like a completely inaccurate portrayal of addiction. the characters’ suffering is given a self-indulgent gore feel and used as shock value rather than to develop them and their stories.
the relationship between Marion and Harry seems like an attempt to create any sort of connection with the characters, but falls short, their story left incohesive and underdeveloped.
the characters are ultimately reduced to the substances they consume, and the fragmented storyline makes for a detached, pointlessly violent film that serves no one but those who fetishise addiction.
