The Substance 2024
I enjoyed it until I didn’t and then I didn’t enjoy it until I did again. Horror is not my favorite genre but the psychological elements kept me hooked throughout the film. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley foil one another exceptionally well. The key set piece being an almost sterile environment added a lot to the story telling. So weird and very well done.

Almost couldn’t be later to watch this Oscar nom. That said, I appreciated knowing it was operatic coming in as that would have made me even more confused than I was at first. After getting past that, the story was poignant and timely in so many ways. I was left guessing how things would end until they did and in many ways could have predicted it and was still surprised. I’d heard mixed things coming in but this movie surprised me in the right ways.

A fine enough movie. Relatively predictable but that’s often the case for fairytales. Millie Bobby Brown is great for what the role entails. Angela Basset did the thing. Could be a good film for preteen fantasy/fairytale lovers. Without the score this film would be nothing. Kudos to David Fleming.

The Emperor's New Groove 2000
Needed a pick-me-up and this didn’t disappoint. The fourth wall breaks are still fantastic and Ertha Kitt is simply amazing. A solid redemption arc and feel good family story make for a light-hearted break from reality. Possible nostalgia here, but this is one of Disney’s most underrated features.
