We really had it all once upon a time with movies like this, The Mummy, and The Count of Monte Cristo. Just incredible period romantic action adventure films oozing with chemistry, incredible set pieces, costumes, stunt work, and scores to carry you through. Always a delight to rewatch.
An absolute fever dream of a film. At times reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland but entirely a fable of Miyazaki’s own creation. Incomprehensible, tedious and chaotic but the visuals, sound design and score hardly disappoint. The Boy and the Heron is best left as a vibe. If you enjoy Miyazaki without examination (or scrutinizingly so) or really dislike birds then this may resonant.
I originally watched this well over a decade ago and it’s always stuck with me since. As a documentary it’s simple but extraordinarily effective as it follows a handful of individuals navigating the legal process of undergoing a sex-change operation in a country that would sentence you to death for any homosexual tendencies. From a western perspective it’s incredibly jarring. You can be trans but you can’t be gay? But therein lies the paradox of the Islamic Republic. How does…
